In 2019, around 1.48 crore of rats were culled and crops worth Tk 300 crore were saved from the threat, according to officials from the Agricultural Extension Department (DAE).

Each year, the DAE runs this campaign for one month. This year’s campaign will run until Nov. 10, according to a press release from Agriculture Information Service.

The motto of the National Rat Killing Campaign 2021 is “Jatiya Sampad Rakkharthe, Idur Mari Eksathe (Culling Rats Collectively to Save National Resources)”.

Addressing the program, Agriculture Secretary Md Mesbahul Islam called on relevant officials to step up the rat extermination campaign to save crops from the threat.

He said rats usually destroy farmers’ hard-earned crops. The amount of this loss is approximately Tk 20,900 crore per year.

“Rats must be exterminated collectively. Rat control is essential for increasing food production and food security,” he added.

DAE Director General Md Asadullah chaired the program.
