Michigan apple orchards, cider houses: prices, locations, more
If you’re heading to an apple orchard or cider house this fall, expect to pay more for apples, cider, and donuts.
As cider houses and orchards are in full swing, many owners and operators are faced with a smaller apple harvest, labor shortages and product price increases, resulting in higher overall costs. for the customers.
The below-average apple harvest was due to a late spring frost which damaged the flowers. At the end of April, temperatures dropped below freezing in some growing areas for more than a day. This frost and strong frost damaged all open apple blossoms on many trees.
“Even with frost protection tools and apple trees‘ natural defense mechanisms, some of the fruit has been lost,” Diane Smith, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee, said in a press release.
Several places that would normally offer U-pick apples are not doing so this year. Some orchards have lost a good part of their apple harvest. Most will have apples for sale in their stores. Many cider house operators purchase apples from producers in other parts of the state.
Nancy Steinhauer, owner of Dexter Cider Mill, says they’re trying not to raise prices.
“Overall, it’s nothing I’ve ever seen before,” says Steinhauer, owner of the plant for over 15 years. “Shipments are up, produce is up, apples are up.”
Steinhauer added that several varieties are not available, which increases the cost.
Customers don’t seem to worry about the increases or back down, says Steinhauer. “It’s always a great outing for a family. A gallon of cider and a dozen donuts cost $ 17,” she says.
While Diehl’s Orchard Cider and Mill in Holly doesn’t have U-Picked Apples, they do offer a packing and tote room where you can pick your own varieties.
There you can mix and match the apples for a fixed price. A spout bag, according to co-owner Nick Diehl, costs $ 11 and a half spout costs $ 8. Depending on the size of the apples, you will get 12 to 15 apples in half a spade.
Diehl’s cider is priced at $ 10 per gallon. This is up from $ 8.50 last year.
Apples are Michigan’s most valuable fruit crop. This year, growers are expected to produce about 18.25 million bushels, according to the August USApple Outlook annual meeting held in Chicago.
In 2020, the harvest brought in 22 million bushels.
There is still a lot of fun to be had in the orchards and cider houses in the area, even if you can’t pick your own apples. Many offer farm tours, pumpkin picking, a corn maze walk, tons of donuts, and other dining options. Several also have cellars with tasting rooms.
Blake’s family of farms, which includes Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, Blake’s Big Apple and Blake’s Backyard in Almont, is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
Each location is open daily and offers a host of fall events and attractions. You can pick a variety of apples with pumpkins, both available now through October. There are fun on-farm activities including Barnyard Funland and Adventure at Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill and Blake’s Big Apple. Activities require the purchase of tickets and include a children’s farm, train rides and a mountain of straw.
