Connecticut vineyards begin harvesting grapes for fall

Harvest time in the fall is always a highlight at Lost Acres Vineyard.

GRANBY, Conn. – While drought conditions hampered crops across Connecticut, at the Lost Acres vineyard in North Granby, the grapes held up – it’s no surprise.

The couple who own the vineyard, Michelle Niedermeyer and Kevin Riggott, are excited about the fall season that awaits them.

“The grapes love a ‘California summer’ – hot, dry weather, their root system is very deep,” said Riggott, who makes the wine.

“All plants need rain, but these plants have a three-foot root system – they can survive on very little water and there’s a reason California is the number one producer of grapes, it’s because it’s hot and dry,” added Niedermeyer. “We’re pretty happy with the summer.

Both Riggott and Niedermeyer have said fall is the season they look forward to the most.

“It’s the perfect season for agritourism,” Riggott said. “It has been a wonderful year so far and it will be a very tasty harvest.”

Niedermeyer said harvest time is always a highlight at Lost Acres.

“There’s something so rewarding about harvesting – it’s visceral. You work really hard and then you see those grapes, it’s just fabulous,” Niedermeyer said.

Lost Acres is just one of the farms in Granby to participate in the “Open Farm Day” which takes place on Saturdays. A dozen farms in the Granby region will participate in a day of celebration and will organize family events and offer the opportunity to discover their land.
