Beauregard Vineyards embarks on 76th harvest in the Santa Cruz Mountains

Bonny Doon, California, – Sep 1, 2021 –Beauregard Vineyards began harvesting Chardonnay from the family’s Beauregard Ranch estate in the wee hours of the morning of September 1, in a blanket of fog. For winemaker Ryan Beauregard, who grew up on Bonny Doon’s ranch where his father, Jim still lives, this day not only represents his 23rd harvest, but also a profound change from last year, when the CZU fire almost wiped out her livelihood, home and vineyards. Due to the relentless smoke and ash, last year’s beautiful harvest was rendered unusable, but the efforts of Ryan and his loyal neighbors saved the vines.

Beauregard says: “This is a proud moment for my family as we celebrate our 76e harvest from a property that was originally planted in the 1880s by the Queistorff family. It’s amazing to think that grapes have been harvested on this land for 135 years! We may have lost our entire harvest last year, but we will do our best to make the best wine of this vintage.

It has something to aspire to, as Wine Enthusiast just posted its scores for the latest Beauregard submissions, and the 2019 Beauregard Ranch Chardonnay ($ 60) just received 95 points, its highest score ever. Sister Chardonnay of the Bald Mountain Vineyard family ($ 60) scored 96 points, also her highest score ever.

This beautiful Chardonnay is not the first fruit to cross the Crushpad this 2021 harvest season. On August 11, Beauregard brought in Carignan, Mourvèdre and Zinfandel from 135 year old vines from Sandy Lane vineyard in Contra County. Costa, as he did last year, just days before the lightning-triggered CZU fires devastated the region and caused the largest evacuation ever in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Almost 1,000 homes were razed and much of Big Basin Park’s infrastructure was left in ruins.

But there was light at the end of the dark 2020 tunnel. As Beauregard and his neighbors battled the fires with everything they could, from dump trucks to leaf blowers, Contra Costa’s grapes remained unattended in plastic-lined fermentation tanks. When Beauregard peeled the plastic off, he discovered that the grapes had fermented on their own, without any input. According to Beauregard, “The plastic coating had trapped the natural gas CO2 and kept the wine from spoiling. What I found was that the wine was in fact in good condition. Thanks to the pure musculature of Zinfandel, Carignan and Mourvèdre from these 135-year-old vines, the wine also survived the fire. After locating a generator, I was able to press the wine into vats where it remained alone for several weeks before being put into neutral barrels.

The wine has just been released under its second label, the popular “Lost Weekend” series, which pays homage to the tasting room he bought from Randall Grahm in 2008. It was previously the Bonny Doon tasting room and a drinking trough. much appreciated. for decades before that. According to Beauregard, “The ‘Lost Weekend’ went through many natural disasters, including two major earthquakes: 1906 and 1989. It went through the Great Fire of 1905, the Pine Mountain fire of 1945, the fire Martin’s 2008, the Lockheed Martin Fire of 2009, and most recently the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. “

The wine is a miracle, filled with vibrant fruit, intense flavor and glorious depth, such as only old vines can produce. It can be purchased online for $ 25 / bottle and is worth every penny.

The fact that Bonny Doon’s community remains largely intact is a testament to the bravery of the renegades and mountain faithful who refused to give up their homes, livelihoods, and even their inheritance. Like those 135-year-old vines that produced Lost Weekend wine, the tasting room and winery at Beauregard Vineyards, along with their 65 acres of vines at Beauregard Ranch, Coast Grade Vineyard, and Bald Mountain Vineyard, remain survivors of a another disaster.
